Institute of Biotechnology
Kell Muñoz Architects designed this 60,000 gsf building which is dedicated to the studies of pathogenesis of disease. It was the first major building in The Texas Research Park and, upon dedication in 1990, became the centerpiece of biotechnology in Texas. It is home to the department of molecular medicine.
The floor plan of the IBT was developed to promote interaction among researchers; the administration and offices are grouped in suites at one end, lab space in the middle and common spaces at the other end. The building’s exterior reflects the functions inside; the laboratory block is framed with pieces meant to relate to landscape and Texas traditions. Animal and service support areas occur below the first level.
